  Prologue

  “Have you found her?”

“Angelo didn’t leave much of a trail, but I managed to track her down to a small town in Montana.”

“Excellent, we leave at once.” Nick turned from where he gazed through the window at the city below and butted out his cigarette. He took the folder from his man and tucked it under his arm then turned to his loyal men and looked them over. They were nothing more than a bunch of thugs really, but that was just what his business required. He needed men that were more brawn than brains and whose only ambition was to make money anyway they could.

Nick had taken over the family business when his brother Angelo was shot dead. He didn’t care that some dumb bitch had shot his brother, it was his own damned fault. He still had a score to settle. Nobody shot a Russo and lived to tell the tale.

“I’ll take you three.” Nick pointed to his three deadliest men and his most loyal. It was scary what those three thought of as fun. “Pack light, and no guns. We can restock when we get to America. George, I need you to watch things here.”

  “Righto, Boss,” George replied.

Nick didn’t need to say more. His men would follow his bidding, and he needed to pack. Once he had done his family duty and avenged his brother’s death, he could settle back and expand the business. He was tired of heroin. It wasn’t selling like it used to. No, methamphetamines were what the kids were taking these days, and he wanted his cut.

He had his plan all ready. He would push out the local dealers and have his men run the drugs. He was going to make a fortune. All he had to do was get rid of that meddling bitch Sarah and he could get on with his life.

Nick made his way into his bedroom and looked at his reflection in the mirror. He was a good-looking man. He brushed his ink-black locks back into place and pocketed his comb. He had just turned thirty and had women falling all over him. Nick wasn’t tall, he was average, but his slim, slightly muscled build made up for what he lacked in height.

Many a woman had complimented him on his green eyes, and the laugh lines that crinkled the edges made him appear mature and stately. He had a three-day growth that added to his charm and a smile that made most women swoon at his leather-covered feet. Nick always wore the best suits money could buy, and he never left the house looking anything but the rich businessman.

When all was said and done, he was glad his brother was dead. Nick was much better for the business. His fat, balding brother had no clue about the way things were these days, and really if he thought about it, Sarah had done him a favor.

She had not only killed his brother, but his two thugs as well. She may not have physically killed the other two lik
e she did Angelo, but they were dead because of her. Now he had installed his own loyal men in their place, and he didn’t have to worry about men that were not loyal to him and him only.

Nick was slightly pissed by the loss of the federal and police contacts that had been arrested when his brother was stupid enough to be seen murdering two people. The investigation had lead to the feds finding a number of their contacts, and that had left them at a disadvantage. They weren’t the only dirty cops in the city, though, and despite the fact that he would have to tread lightly, he was sure he could get new ones on his payroll.

Nick moved over to his desk and looked over the information that George had given him. Sarah was going under a different name, but they had managed to find her again. She was living in a small town called Merricks with two men. One was a marshal and the town sheriff, and the other was a rancher. The dirty bitch was probably fucking both of them. Never mind, he would just have to kill them, too.

Nick looked over the map of the small town and then closed the folder. He would get a good night’s sleep and then be on a plane tomorrow morning. The quicker this was over and done with, the better. The stupid small-town hicks would be no match for him and his men. Nick smiled to himself and made his way to the shower. His life was going just the way he wanted, and nobody was going to fuck it up.

  Chapter One

It had been months since Kate had seen her sister Sarah. Months since her older sister had to go into hiding after seeing her best friend murdered. Now Kate was about to disembark the airplane that had bought her to Montana. They were moments away from being reunited, and Kate was as excited as hell.

Kate and Sarah had always been close, had grown up the best of friends, and it wasn’t until they had started doing separate university courses that they had started to enjoy different things and take different career paths. Sarah was a librarian and had always loved the written word. Kate was more of a doer. She had become a teacher and loved spending time with the kids and watching them grow and change.

Her sister had grown and changed. Without Kate. Whilst in hiding in Merricks, Sarah had grown into a confident woman. Now she was going to marry not one, but two men. Kate was over the moon that Sarah had found love. She deserved all the happiness in the world. Kate didn’t want to be a prude about the whole multiple men thing. She just couldn’t get on board with the idea.

She was never going to tell her sister. She didn’t want to cause problems and Sarah could choose to live her life anyway she wanted. It just wasn’t for her. She would stick to one man. If she were lucky enough to find him.

Kate grabbed her bag from the overhead compartment and turned to her parents. They looked bedraggled after the long flight, and Kate bet she looked just as bad.

“Have we got everything?” her mother asked. “I don’t want to leave anything behind.”

Kate knew her mother wasn’t really fretting about leaving something behind, but more about the fact that she was so close to seeing Sarah again. She would probably start bawling before they even got out of the terminal to meet Sarah.

“It’s fine, dear,” her father answered. “I’ve got everything under control. Let’s just get off this god-awful plane.”

He hated flying. It was a real testament to his love for Sarah if he got on a plane and traveled halfway around the world for her.

“I need coffee and a hairbrush,” Kate said as she started to make her way off the plane and down the corridor that led to the terminal.

“You look lovely, Kate,” her mother told her. “You always do. Besides, Sarah won’t care how disheveled we look. I can’t wait to hold her in my arms again.”

Great, Kate knew it. There went the waterworks.

“Mum, please. Can’t you wait until we at least see Sarah before you start crying?”

“No, I’m just so happy to see her. You will understand when you have children of you own.”

Kate doubted that. She was still a virgin. Oh, men had been interested, but she was too busy building her teaching career to worry about men. Now she was twenty-five years old with no sign of losing it in the near future.

Kate lifted her backpack further onto her shoulder as they walked out past security and into the terminal. It had taken three flights to get to Great Falls with stopovers in Los Angles and Denver. She was sick of airports and planes and wanted to sleep for a week. They still had to drive back to Merricks, which was a couple of hours drive. At least she could sleep in the car.

Kate searched the terminal as she walked over to the baggage area. She couldn’t see her sister anywhere. That was unusual, as her sister was never late. She watched her dad grab their bags and put them on the trolley, all the while wondering what was taking her sister so damned long. She wanted to see her, hug her, and tell her how much she had missed her. Shit, maybe she was going to start to howl, too. That would make a great first impression on her soon-to-be in-laws.

She stood next to her parents, tapping her feet with impatience, when she spied Sarah walking toward her at a clipped pace. She was flanked by two tall, good-looking cowboys, which Kate assumed were her men. Saying they were tall was an understatement. One of the men was well over six foot and full of solid muscle. Whilst the other was shorter and less muscular, he, too, would still be over six feet.

When Sarah spotted her and her parents, she cried out and ran toward them. Kate met her halfway and pulled her into a big hug. She held onto her tight as she felt tears prick her eyes. It was great to see her sister again and know that she was safe and happy.

It had been a worrying time for Kate, knowing that her sister’s life was in danger and not being able to do anything about it. Even though Agent Alex Smith had assured her that Sarah was in good hands, Kate couldn’t let go of the worry. It was her job to worry about her sister. Sarah had always been such a shy person that at times it was painful to watch. It had made Kate very protective, despite the fact that Sarah was older.

“God, it’s so good to see you. I missed you so much,” Kate cried and hugged her sister all the tighter.

“I missed you, too, Kate. I’m all right. My men have taken good care of me.” Sarah kissed her on the cheek and then pulled from her embrace. Kate stood back and watched as Sarah was hugged by her crying mother and then by her father. She couldn’t stop the tears that leaked from her eyes this time, as she watched the reunion between Sarah and her parents.

When they had finished sobbing all over each other, Sarah introduced them to the men that she had fallen in love with. The tall bear of a man was Blake. He was the local sheriff, and a marshal. The smaller, shaggy-looking one was James. Sarah had told her on one of their many phone conversations that he ran the ranch.

Kate couldn’t help the pang of jealousy she felt when she saw the love in Sarah eyes as she introduced her men. Kate wanted to find a man that she could love that deeply, someone that was hers and hers alone. Someone that would take control in the bedroom and let Kate be herself out of it. Someone that didn’t mind that she was still a virgin. A chubby virgin with big breasts and a large, full ass.

Kate sighed and wiped at her eyes again. She was just tired, that was all. She was sure that after some rest she wouldn’t be so emotional. Maybe she would even find a nice cowboy in Merricks to have a fling with before she went back to her life. Someone to help finally get rid of her pesky virginity. Then she would go back to teaching and stop worrying about the fact that her sister’s life was moving on without her.

“Let me take your bag, Kate,” James said as they all made their way out of the airport to the cars. She smiled at him and passed it over. Sarah hooked her arm though Kate’s and pulled her along.

“Merricks is great, Kate,” Sarah said. “You’re going to love it. The old buildings are amazing. My favorite is the library, of course.”

  “Of course,” Kate replied dryly.

“But the old firehouse comes in a close second. The firemen aren’t bad either. There is also the diner and Stephie’s Bar
and Grill. They are newer buildings, but the food is amazing and the people are lovely. I’m sure they would love to meet you.”

They hadn’t even left the airport yet and her sister was already trying to set her up.

“Let Kate have a chance to settle in first, baby. Before you drag her all over town.”

Kate smiled her thanks at James and patted her sister’s hand indulgently. Sarah was so full of beans. Kate had never seen her so at ease in public and so excited about something. It was great to see Sarah’s newfound confidence. Blake and James were the reason for that. Kate would always be grateful to them and already considered them part of the family.

“Oh, I forgot,” Sarah said. “How is Alex? I haven’t spoken to him since he took my statement, when I was still in hospital. I hear that you still keep in touch with him.”

“Yes,” Kate replied. “Alex calls often and we chat. He is head of his department now, and once the trials were over and all the bad agents got sentenced, things settled down for him. Alex said he misses the adventure of being a field agent but is happy with his promotion.”

  “So you two are close?”

“Stop fishing, Sarah. Alex is a lovely man, but he’s not for me. At one time, I thought we might suit, but he is too…I don’t know.”

  “Exciting…good-looking…passionate…?”

“Adventurous, maybe. I want a man who will settle down and appreciate married life. Alex will always feel held back. He craves the excitement and adventure of a dangerous job. I’m a school teacher, a homebody. We just don’t fit.”
